In 1996, I heard about a sand sculpting contest before it happened, so I went to Ocean City, N.J. Arriving a few days early, I found out that the sand was not what I was used to. It was a coarse-grained sand with some rocks and shells mixed in, the result of using sand dredged from the channel to replenish the beach, since this beach is subject to erosion. After a while I got used to the sand (it's different at every beach) On the morning of the contest, we were given a 3-hour time limit, and I built a small castle (the one with "Frederick" carved in its base) which won first place in the "adult individual" category. After the contest, I stayed a few more days and tried a few more castles.
